Haiti...back in
More from living on a tarmac and seeing it from the air
When the 82nd Airborne landed, it brought a bit of stability to the airport area, because across Haiti, it was beyond chaotic. Beyond the gunfire and myriad safety issues, the country's buildings, roads, and leadership had crumbled in the earthquake's aftermath. The infrastructure wasn’t strong in the first place before the earthquake in Haiti, but now clearly much worse
About the same time, our security for the first few days consisted of two off-duty Texas police officers. They were nice enough guys, but you could tell they hadn’t spent much time overseas, let alone in a situation like this. So one late afternoon, they decided to have a meeting on the rooftop of the airport to discuss security and a plan for the next couple of days, since we clearly couldn’t continue living on a tarmac.
